FM synthesis builds glassy, metallic sounds out of sine waves modulating other sine waves. For a few years the DX7's electric pianos and bells were everywhere, and analog synths briefly seemed old-fashioned.

It belongs here as the other half of the story. Much of the love for analog that followed started as a reaction against its precision.
